Our Level 3 Award in Awareness of End-of-Life Care (RQF) is an accredited qualification designed to deepen your understanding of death, dying, and its effects on individuals. Developed in line with the Department of Health’s national strategy for end-of-life care, it aims to improve care practices and set a consistent standard across all services.

Throughout this course, you’ll explore end-of-life care, focusing on factors shaping perspectives, effective communication, and utilising support services. You’ll learn to assist individuals nearing the end of life, recognise signs of approaching death, and promote wellbeing. Additionally, we cover psychological considerations and essential procedures following death, including honouring final wishes and supporting those in mourning.

This qualification is offered as a distance learning course, complete with detailed assignments, workbooks, and additional materials. It’s ideal for healthcare workers, caregivers, and anyone looking to enhance their knowledge and application of end-of-life care principles.

Course Content

Mandatory Units

  • Module 1 – Understanding End-of-Life Care: This module covers various perspectives on death, including factors influencing personal views and their impact on practice. It also delves into the aims, principles, and policies of end-of-life care, emphasising dignity, comfort, and local pathways. Communication factors and accessing support services are explored to enhance care provision.
  • Module 2 – Supporting Individuals in Final Days: This module captures the common signs of impending death and the cessation of life-prolonging treatments. Psychological aspects for individuals and their relationships are discussed alongside methods to enhance wellbeing. The module also details actions post-death, including respecting wishes, infection control, and supporting bereaved individuals.
  • Module 3 – Providing End-of-Life Support: This module assesses current approaches to end-of-life care, considering national and local influences. It addresses individual responses to anticipated death, grief models, and spiritual awareness. Communication principles, support for care providers, symptom identification, and advance care planning are also comprehensively covered.

Upon enrolment, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will assist you through achieving successful and meaningful completion of your award. All of the electronic resources, workbooks and assignments required for you to complete the course will be emailed to you for you to commence working with at a time of your convenience. Your tutor will work with you to set targets and milestones that are achievable for you and will check in with you regularly, providing assistance whenever necessary.

On successful completion of your award, your assessor will coordinate with the awarding body for the issuance of your certificates, which will be promptly delivered to you.
