It also addresses understanding relevant theories and legislation, risk management, supporting individuals with autism, and enhancing communication and social interaction.
Aligned with the Department of Health Adult Autism Strategy, our course encompasses all conditions on the autistic spectrum and adheres to the statutory guidance of The Autism Act, preparing professionals across various roles. Following the Oliver McGowan Autism Framework, it addresses tier 1 and several tier 2 outcomes, enriched with extra content to fulfil the broader framework requirements.
The course features seven theory-based modules, offered remotely to allow flexible learning. It includes assignments, workbooks, and extensive resources to facilitate your educational journey.

Mandatory Units
- Module 1 – Understanding Sensory Processing, Perception, and Cognition in Autism: This module explores how individuals with autism process sensory information, examining hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity. It covers sensory-related behaviours, balance difficulties, body awareness issues, and cognitive differences. Strategies for supporting sensory needs, managing sensory overload, and creating supportive environments are discussed.
- Module 2 – Understanding Autism: This module delves into the diverse spectrum of autism, including Asperger’s syndrome and high-functioning autism. It addresses lifelong characteristics, signs, and symptoms of autism, emphasising neurodiversity. Co-occurring conditions, challenges in diagnosis, and available support networks are explored.
- Module 3 – Supporting and Promoting Positive Behaviour in Autism: This module highlights how autism influences interactions and routines. Strategies for coping with changes, reducing prompt dependency, and supporting obsessions are provided. Positive behaviour reinforcement techniques, proactive and reactive strategies, and managing challenging behaviours are covered.
- Module 4 – Understanding Theories, Support, and Legislation in Autism: This module outlines key theories like Kanner’s and Asperger’s. It discusses legislation guiding autism support, confidentiality principles, and access to services. Employment barriers, support networks, and specialist roles are also explored.
- Module 5 – Managing Risks in Supporting Autism: This module discusses prevalent attitudes, media representation, and discrimination against autistic individuals. Strategies for maintaining personal safety, safeguarding against exploitation and bullying, and promoting positive risk-taking are provided.
- Module 6 – Supporting Individuals Living with Autism: This module advocates treating individuals with autism compassionately and non-judgmentally. It explores the impact of autism on development, education, and family dynamics. Transition support and utilising formal and informal networks are discussed.
- Module 7 – Understanding Effective Communication and Social Interaction in Autism: This module examines speech, language, and social interaction challenges in autism. It covers communication methods, difficulties in verbal communication, and social development delays. Strategies for supporting communication and creating positive interaction environments are provided.

On successful completion of your award, your assessor will coordinate with the awarding body for the issuance of your certificates, which will be promptly delivered to you.
