Course Content

Mandatory Units

  • Module 1 – Understanding Dementia: This module covers the neurology of dementia, various causes and memory impairments associated with it, as well as how individuals process information. It explores the impact of recognition and diagnosis of dementia, emphasising a person-centred approach to care, and addressing myths and stereotypes related to dementia.
  • Module 2 – Medication Administration in Dementia Care: This module outlines common medications for dementia and their effects, including risks and benefits of anti-psychotic medication. It emphasises person-centred care in medication administration and advocates for individuals with dementia. Additionally, it addresses the use of PRN medication for pain relief.
  • Module 3 – Understand the role of communication and interactions with individuals who have dementia: This module covers the diverse communication methods in dementia care and emphasises effective communication and positive interactions. It explores how different forms of dementia affect communication, factors influencing interactions, and the impact of the environment as well as the role of language in hindering communication.
  • Module 4 – Diversity and Inclusion in Dementia Care: This module delves into diversity, anti-discriminatory, and anti-oppressive practices in dementia care. It emphasises recognising and respecting individual heritage, challenging discrimination, and understanding unique experiences of dementia. Additionally, it discusses person-centred working, legislation, and practical ways to maintain the identity of individuals with dementia.

Upon enrolment, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will assist you through achieving successful and meaningful completion of your award. All of the electronic resources, workbooks and assignments required for you to complete the course will be emailed to you for you to commence working with at a time of your convenience. Your tutor will work with you to set targets and milestones that are achievable for you and will check in with you regularly, providing assistance whenever necessary.

On successful completion of your award, your assessor will coordinate with the awarding body for the issuance of your certificates, which will be promptly delivered to you.
