Restraint and Physical Intervention for Children Training

Our Restraint and Physical Intervention for Children Training course equips care staff with the practical skills and knowledge needed to effectively and compassionately prevent and manage behaviours that challenge. This training emphasises positive, person-centred approaches that reduce reliance on high-risk interventions, promote safety, and achieve long-term positive outcomes by incorporating restorative practice principles.

This course is delivered using the Empower Programme methodology, a specialist approach for behaviour management, least restrictive practice and physical intervention, that prioritises safety, dignity, and respect. The Empower Programme methodology is delivered by our qualified expert trainer, drawing upon over a decade of experience delivering industry recognised behaviour management and restraint training across multiple established programmes, including:

  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
  • TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention)
  • MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression)
  • Team Teach
  • P.P.R (Predict, Prevent, Respond)

The Empower Programme methodology builds upon the principles of P.P.R, ensuring that all physical interventions and holds have undergone rigorous risk assessment. Every technique used has been independently reviewed and approved by a qualified osteopath to ensure alignment with natural body movement, minimising the risk of injury for both staff and the individuals they support. A pre-training health and fitness assessment is also conducted to ensure participants can safely engage in the physical aspects of the course, provided with an audit trail for your records.

Through this face-to-face training, participants will develop a deep understanding of behavioural triggers, crisis prevention strategies, and evidence-based intervention techniques. The course blends theoretical learning with hands-on practice, empowering care teams to confidently create supportive environments that prioritise dignity, inclusion, and well-being.

This course is ideal for care professionals working with children and young people in residential children’s homes or other services where supporting young people with behaviours that challenge is a key focus. It is suitable for new staff, experienced practitioners, and teams looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in behaviour support.

Compliance and Quality Assurance

There is currently no universally recognised accreditation system or government standard for models of restraint and physical intervention for children. However, best practice emphasises a positive, person-centred approach that prioritises the safety, dignity, and well-being of the individual.

The Empower Programme methodology aligns with these principles, ensuring that behaviour support strategies are evidence-based, trauma-informed, and designed to minimise restrictive practices. All physical interventions used within the Empower approach have undergone rigorous risk assessment, with techniques independently reviewed and signed off by a qualified osteopath to safeguard against harm.

Delivery of the Training

This course will be delivered by an expert trainer in this field at a date and time of your choosing. Training can be hosted at our own premises, which can comfortably accommodate up to 12 individuals, or at your own premises if feasible and required. We are flexible on start times to help accommodate all shift patterns, including evenings and weekends.

Health Declaration And Participant Safety:

To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, a pre-training health and fitness assessment will be conducted. This assessment will confirm their ability to safely engage in the physical elements of the course and identify any potential concerns in advance. As part of this process, each staff member will complete a Health Declaration Form, providing an audit record for your organisation/service.

At the end of the session, participants will complete a post-training declaration, confirming both that no injuries occurred during training and their ability (or any limitations) in delivering each of the physical aspects covered.

If a staff member has a significant health condition that may impact their participation, we encourage advance disclosure so that appropriate guidance can be provided. Where necessary, adjustments will be made to prioritise safety, which may, in some cases, mean they are unable to take part in the physical aspects of the training. If this occurs, it will be discussed with the individual and reported to designated key members of your team.

Customisation and Relevance: We can adapt the content of this training to include your organisation’s core values, mission, policies, and procedures. By incorporating examples of documents used within your organisation, we ensure that the training is relevant and clear to your staff.
