Award in emergency first aid Level 2

Our Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) is made up of one module accredited qualification on which you will learn first aid skills through a one-day face-to face training course. 

This qualification is designed to develop the first aid knowledge and skills of learners who are required to provide emergency first aid to employees injured or taken ill at work in line with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of: Resuscitation Council (UK) Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications Aims and objectives:

This qualification indicates an individual can undertake the role of Emergency First Aider in the Workplace that may have been identified by a workplace risk assessment and can be relied upon by employers to satisfy the due diligence requirements of the HSE for EFAW training providers.

The qualification will benefit all who need to be introduced to emergency first aid in the workplace and those who require requalification training in emergency first aid in the workplace.

Successful completion indicates knowledge and skills that have been identified by the HSE for the safe, effective and prompt treatment of injuries and illness in the workplace. The content of the qualification meets the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements for training first aiders in those organisations that have identified that staff need to be trained to this level within their first aid needs assessment.

Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of first aider The qualification covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness. In line with guidance provided by the HSE, the qualification supports/approves workplace first aiders for a period of 3 years, after which point, learners will need to retake the course. Therefore, the qualification is valid for three years from the date of award. In addition to this, it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Course Content

Module 1 (Mandatory)

Emergency First Aid in the Workplace

Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider Assessment

  1. Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  2. Describe how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  3. Identify the need for establishing consent to provide first aid
  4. Complete an accident report form
  5. Identify the first aid equipment that should be available in a workplace
  6. Describe the safe use of first aid equipment

Be able to assess an emergency incident

  1. Conduct a scene survey
  2. Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  3. Know when to call for help

Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally

  1. Assess a casualty’s level of consciousness
  2. Open a casualty’s airway and check breathing
  3. Explain why it is important to place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position
  4. Place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  5. Manage a casualty who is in seizure

Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally

  1. Recognise the need to commence Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  2. Demonstrate Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation using a manikin

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock

  1. Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock
  2. Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock

Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking

  1. Describe how to identify a casualty with
    • a) Partially blocked airway
    • b) Completely blocked airway
  2. Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking

Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding

  1. Identify the types of external bleeding
  2. Control external bleeding

Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries

  1. Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with:
    • Small cuts
    • Grazes
    • Bruises
    • Small splinters
  2. Recognise the difference between a burn and a scald
  3. Administer first aid to a casualty with small cuts, grazes and bruises
  4. Administer first aid to a casualty with small splinters
  5. Administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds

The full cost of this qualification is £100 per person or £1100 per course (maximum of 12 delegates) which is duly invoiced at the point of enrolment.

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OfQual) regulates this qualification, examinations and assessments in England.
